Stichting Lucie Burgers
Objective
The Stichting Lucie Burgers has been founded to research
comparative behaviour in animals and this foundation aims to
improve knowledge about behaviour and ecology. The Foundation
primarily tries to acquire insight that can help the survival of
animal species. Insight into the ecological and behavioural
adaptations of an animal species is the basis for more effective
management and conservation.
Background
The Stichting Lucie Burgers has been founded in 1980 and named
after Lucie Burgers. She was the daughter of the founder and one of
the previous Board members of Burgers' Zoo in Arnhem. Lucie Burgers
had an extensive knowledge of animals and was a very decisive
woman.
It is to be expected that the survival of many animal species can
only be assured under conditions that are more or less regulated by
human contributions. These conditions vary from protected nature
reserves to zoos.
Within the given conditions an acceptable well-being and realistic
possibilities of survival of the species must be strived for
according to biological standards for individual animals. Therefore
the Foundation primarily supports research into the living
conditions and the behaviour of species in the wild.
