The green key: gold again!
The Arnhem animal park, Burgers’ Zoo, was also able to renew the golden gradation of The Green Key, an international brand for durability, environment and socially responsible entrepreneurship for businesses in the tourism and recreation branch, in the year 2011. Since 2005 Burgers’ Zoo, together with parties like Dierenpark Emmen and the National Park De Hoge Veluwe, was at the inception of the development of the internationally recognised brand with respect to the day-trip recreation sector. From the moment of the official establishment of The Green Key in 2007 the animal park has held the golden gradation.
Mandatory and optional standards
Organisations with The Green Key comply with the strict standards in the area of durability, environment and socially responsible entrepreneurship. These standards focus on internal and external communication, durability in the management of the enterprise, use of energy, gas and water, waste management, transportation, food and drinks, green space maintenance, durable measures taken at the office, use of paper, type of printed matter and durable purchase of products. Each organisation has to comply with all of the mandatory standards and a number of the optional standards. The measure in which the optional standards are obtained, determines the gradation: bronze, silver or gold.
Positive points for Burgers’ Zoo
Burgers’ Zoo owes the golden gradation to a large number of extra measures the animal park has taken in addition to the mandatory standards. For example, the animal park has concluded a covenant with FSC Nederland (Forest Stewardship Council) since 2004. This inspection mark guarantees that the types of wood concerned comply with the highest requirements for socially, environmentally friendly and economically responsible forest management. In addition Burgers' Zoo frequently uses durable techniques for energy control such as a hot / cold storage system whereby the excess heat in the summer is stored with the groundwater so it can be used in the winter and vice versa. Another key point of Burgers’ Zoo is the annual financial donation of two hundred thousand Euros to nature preservation projects of the Stichting Future for Nature and the Stichting Lucie Burgers.
