A RINGED SEAL IS BORN!

On Wednesday, February 17, very early in the morning, Jan Veldhuis, our head caretaker, discovered a ringed seal pup. Burgers' Zoo is the only zoo in the world where ringed seals have ever been born. The last time this happened at our zoo was in 2014

EXCITING FIRST WEEKS

The first week is exciting for newborn ringed seals. The pup has to start drinking well and get in good condition. When that happens you can almost see the pup grow, because it will double its body weight in a week. An adult animal weighs a maximum of 115 kg, so the pup has a long way to go. Ringed seals live in waters around Scandinavia, Iceland, Greenland and in other northern regions.

SANDY HOLLOW

At this time the pup is still in a sandy hollow in the corner of the seal quarters. The mother regularly goes there to care for the pup. Because of it a lot of patience is sometimes needed before the pup can be seen. It is expected that in the coming days he or she can be better seen somewhere around the quarters.
