Children enthusiastically besiege new playground

At 11 a.m. on 21 February, director Alex van Hoof of Royal Burgers’ Zoo will fire a starting shot, signalling to fifty impatient children of the Arnhem primary school De Wijzer that they are allowed to storm the completely renovated outdoor playground of the Arnhem Zoo. After this playful opening, the playground is open to all visitors.

1000 m2 of sustainable outdoor fun

After more than fifteen years of loyal service, the former outdoor playground needed replacing. Burgers’ Zoo now has an entirely new playground made of sustainable Robinia wood—which has a lifespan of up to twenty-five years—on an area of no less than one thousand square metres. SIK-Holz in Germany manufactured the playground. The new playground requires little maintenance and has a natural appearance because the natural structure of the wood is preserved in the design.

Adventurous and safe

Experience is central to Burgers’ Zoo’s philosophy, so the new playground has to be fun,  pose a challenge and be safe. The independent inspection authority TÜV has extensively tested and approved the new playground. Wood chips have been put on the ground to cushion a possible fall. An area designated to children aged 0 to 4 has been built close to the outdoor terrace. The rest of the playground is intended for children aged 4 to 12.

Magical atmosphere: smoke machines and mood lighting at Burgers’ Light

Saturday 23 February marks the start of Burgers’ Light. During this event, the playground will remain open until 21:00 every evening so that everyone can discover the new addition for themselves. During the evening hours, the outdoor playground will be given a magical atmosphere using smoke machines and mood lighting. A unique happening, because usually the outdoor playground is closed in the evenings.
