Future For Nature

Future For Nature

Burgers’ Zoo believes in the power of young and talented nature conservationists who, with their passion for the conservation of a species, can make a difference in the natural habitats of animals. Burgers’ Zoo has therefore been affiliated with Future for Nature for several years. This foundation annually presents the Future for Nature Awards to three young and upcoming nature conservationists who have achieved remarkable results in the field of nature conservation. They each receive an incentive prize of €50,000 for the continuation of their project. Burgers' Zoo donates this money. Every year, dozens of projects are submitted to an international jury of experts for assessment.

Burgers’ Zoo also organises the annual Future for Nature Gala, where the award winners tell their inspiring story to some 500 guests. The projects are also promoted through the media, hopefully creating even more extensive support. In recent years, famous conservationists and internationally renowned scientists such as Sir David Attenborough, Jane Goodall, Frans de Waal and Redmond O’Hanlon have presented the Future for Nature Awards. Saba Douglas-Hamilton, BBC documentary maker and chairperson of our International Selection Committee, is also present at the award ceremony.

The Future For Nature Academy is a national network of students and graduates with a passion for nature conservation. It was founded by ecologist Ignas Heitkönig of the University of Wageningen and PhD student Rascha Nuijten at the Future For Nature Awards in 2016. By organising lectures, workshops, documentary evenings and other activities in different locations throughout the Netherlands, the Academy provides a platform for young people to meet, discuss and plan together for a better future for nature.
