Our manatee is pregnant again! If all goes well, we expect her to give birth in December or January. We don’t have an exact due date because we have not done an ultrasound scan. Also, like in humans, calves can be born earlier or later than the expected date. Performing an ultrasound scan on an animal that permanently lives in the water is very complicated, and we want to disturb the pregnant female as little as possible if there is no good reason to do so.
Follow the pregnant manatee via the live stream
The manatees live in a basin with a volume of one million litres of water, and it is impossible to monitor the entire basin with a single camera. Nevertheless, we would like to offer you the opportunity to watch the manatees from above. We could get lucky and capture the birth live on camera. In any case, it will be very interesting to watch the animals in the coming time. Follow the pregnant manatee live here!
Caribbean manatee gestation period
The gestation period for Caribbean manatees is about twelve months. Manatees are mammals, and the calves drink milk from their mother. The two nipples are located on either side of her body, just below the flippers. Manatees usually have one young, although twins also occur. The mother can often be seen helping her calf to surface to breathe shortly after birth. Calves quickly become strong swimmers. A calf will usually stay close to its mother initially; as it gets older, it begins to explore its surroundings with increasing curiosity.
